The following workshop was taken as a summer class for Architecture Students ( Universidad Francisco Marroquin ) from Guatemala in a trip to Moscow and St Petersburg, Russia. The main goal was to find the essence in urban semiotics. Berlin: Map of Signs

Martin Ruge: creating a map of Berlin that documents signs, logos and symbols. Equiped with GPS, all images are tagged with location coordinates that make up an interactive online map of Berlin. The idea is to explore the map, track individuals journeys through the city and discover similarlities and/or difference between the various different districts of Berlin.

Barcelona: One

Paula Kleiman / Teleduca: Finding different ways to look at our neighborhood of Trinitat Vella, searching for what we identify with.

Berlin: Private Berlin

Monica Segura-Marquez (visual communication/photographer) worked with 12 students from the Schiller-Gymnasium (highschool) on the topic of Berlin residents‘ public and private space. In Berlin notes are posted anywhere along the street and other public spaces. That’s very typical for Berlin. People advertise what they are looking for or what they have to offer: piano lessons, a room to let, run-a-way cats or jobs wanted. The youngsters collected these notes along one street in Kreuzberg, a central district of Berlin. Then they called the people on the notes and visited them to present what was advertised through a photographic image. Curios and interesting encounters evolved – the challenge was to find and shoot symbolic images within minutes. Three boys from the same group explored at the same time how much „private“ one finds in the public space.

Barcelona: Four

Pamela Gallo / UbuTV: working with a group of young immigrants from Casal d’Infants del Raval aged 15 to 25. A very multicultural group with some communicative problems. The aim was partly to show them the city, for them to move around better. Consequently, the themes of the photos were informed by several different neighborhoods in Barcelona, such us Montjuic park, the Port, the Manzana de la Discordia and others.

London: South

Erica Scourti:Starting off from the school gates and ending with a walk through Greenwich Park, Erica worked with a group of girls to record different views of their local area with digital cameras, from close up shots of details to scenic views across London from the park.

Berlin: Geschichts-Design

Jürgen Kuhn: We begin by asking ourselves how history manifests itself in the urban landscape and what it is that makes it an official history. In our commercially driven world, where every product has its price, even history and its representation is turned into a merchandise. As part of the photographic workshop I'd like us to look at historical sites in Berlin, a photographic search for traces which shall open up to very personal and unexpected views on details, making the complexity of each site become visible. The ways in which the photographic work will be presented in the exhibition 'Signs of the City' shall reflect the ways in which historical images become commercialized and let the exhibited photographs of history write their own histories.

A workshop with secondary students focusing on researching the streets and on close human and community interaction with groups and situations presented. Barcelona: Two

Almendra Salazar: The photographic workshop that we run in Roquetas, leads a group of young people to rediscover their neighbourhood and to bring consciousness and make them take part in the reality that surrounds them, both: in a direct and an indirect way; as well as exploring a new form for them of expression and experimentation, being themselves surprised of their own capacities.

Barcelona: Three

Javier Oliden / UbuTV: working with different approaches towards the concept of 'the sign', with young adults between 20 and 30 years old, who already study subjects such as poetic signs, food signs, money signs etc. at University. We initiated a comparative cultural analysis on the street signs of different countries and developed a very productive working method: participants took pictures during the week. In our meetings we then analized them and proposed new topics. A small scale exhibition was put together in April 2008, in several different meeting places.

Barcelona: La Mina

The workshop in the Neighbourhood of La Mina shows the environment of the photographers participating. It’s the look of kids between 8 and 13 years old. The purpose is to reflect what they perceive from their families, friends, and neighbours, in their everyday places around the hood, and how they make part of the place where they live. Through the photographic language, we try to explain their point of view.
